Where to find help

  • Your GP

The first port of call for any pain that persists. Your GP coordinates the work-up, the treatment and any referral on to a specialist.

  • Pain clinics

Hospital-based multidisciplinary services for chronic pain that has not responded to usual care. Access is normally by medical referral; waiting times can be long, so it is worth planning ahead.

  • Your pharmacist

Immediate, free advice on painkillers available without a prescription, on interactions, on maximum doses and on the situations that mean you should see a doctor.

  • Patient organisations

They provide information, peer support groups and self-management programmes, particularly for fibromyalgia, endometriosis, migraine and rheumatic diseases.

  • European emergency number

112 works in every European Union member state, free of charge, from a landline or a mobile, and even without a SIM card.

  • Psychological support

Psychologists trained in chronic pain, cognitive behavioural therapy and acceptance and commitment programmes, in person or online.

Our editorial method

The content of this site is written from reference sources: World Health Organization guidance, the definitions and classifications of the IASP, national clinical guidelines such as those issued by NICE, and systematic reviews.

Every page shows the date on which it was last updated and lists its main references. The six language versions are adaptations written in each language, not machine translations: the medical terminology used is the one professionals actually use in the country concerned.

We receive no funding from the pharmaceutical industry, we carry no advertising and we recommend no brand and no product.

Frequently asked questions about the site

Can I get medical advice through this form?

No. We do not provide consultations, diagnoses or prescriptions at a distance, and we do not answer personal medical questions.

Does the site collect personal data?

No. The site is entirely static: no cookies, no trackers, no stored form data. The language switcher only remembers your choice in your own browser, on your own device.

May I reuse this content?

A short quotation with a link to the source page is welcome. For anything more extensive, particularly in a professional or charitable setting, please contact us first.

How do I report an error or suggest an improvement?

Write to us, saying which page is involved and, if possible, the reference you are relying on. Documented reports are dealt with first.
